We take a great deal of pride, at OFF THE WALL, in our gallery’s impactful track record, stretching back to December 1978, and in our strong advocacy for women artists, dating to that first show, “Their Names Are Not Anonymous Anymore,” and shortly thereafter extending to transgender artists with Roberta Dickinson’s solo exhibition less than a year later.
But as we were building our practice nearly 50 years ago — pioneering because OFF THE WALL is an alternative gallery in a public space — we were definitely paying attention to the model of inclusive art-making some 1,000 feet away. THE PLASTIC CLUB, founded by women, just like our space,
We are at a moment in our lives when there is even greater urgency to recounting and reclaiming our own histories — those we have experienced, those we carry with us and the ones we choose to fight for — sometimes extending to a vision the future. No truth is self-evident anymore.
You will find a wonderful diversity of voices and ideas among the 34 artists and 58 works of HISTORIES RECLAIMED, our 20th annual summer juried exhibition. The show coincides with what is being billed as our city’s greatest summer, but rather than fit into a convenient narrative, our artists are challenging you to explore, engage and actively question what we think we know.
This is not a structured or contained conversation. As with all OFF THE WALL shows, we seek to inspire new perspectives and let the conversation spill out into other spaces and communities and, indeed, the world. We invite you to see what our artists have to share and say, from now through Friday, August 14.
